About Maureen Theberge

Maureen Theberge

Registered Phychologist

My name is Maureen Theberge, Registered Psychologist. I believe that to feel comfortable trusting me with your concerns, you should know a little about me. I am a born and raised Calgarian. My first career was as a diagnostic technician in the 80’s. The time I spent with those suffering from chronic pain and/or terminal illness allowed me to observe the resilient nature of the human spirit, which continues to influence my counselling approach today. In 1989 I returned to school to obtain my bachelor’s degree in Education. I taught adult upgrading in Medicine Hat. This experience allowed me the opportunity to help others with career planning and to achieve academic success even if they had struggled within the regular school system. After moving to Calgary and raising 4 children, I returned to school and obtained my Masters in Counselling Psychology. In addition to my formal training, I draw on my own life experience which allows me to empathize when my clients struggle with the universal challenges inherent in life’s journey. These challenges may include raising children, separation and divorce, aging, helping elderly parents, and the death of loved ones.

I have been in private practice since 2012, counselling people with anxiety, depression, stress, parenting, chronic pain, grief and loss, separation and divorce, and a multitude of life transitions. I have also worked for the Calgary Board of Education in the Employee Health Resource Centre. My personal and professional journey has brought me closer to the experience of grief and loss. I became very interested in how people mourn and soon recognized that our generation falls short in its ability to support people during the unavoidable experience of loss. I traveled to the Center for Loss in Fort Collins Colorado and received my Grief and Death Studies Certification under the mentorship of Dr. Alan Wolfelt. I continue to pursue additional opportunities to enrich my bereavement skills in order to help my clients as they are faced with grief, not only after death loss, but as a result of any loss due to life changes.

My approach to counselling is humanistic and client-centered. I utilize Mindfulness, Solution-Focused, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques to help my clients with the difficulties they are facing. For those suffering from grief and loss, I employ the Companioning model of care. Clients appreciate my warm and accepting nature and my sense of humour. I welcome you to call me for a free 15-minute phone consultation to determine if I am the right counsellor for you. If I believe that I am unable to help you address your concerns, I am more than happy to refer you to another counsellor or to direct you to other resources which may be beneficial.

When I am not working, I enjoy traveling, reading, cooking, walking my dog, and spending time with my friends and family.
